Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi affirms Tehran’s readiness to forge greater understanding between Pakistan and India amid the two neighboring countries’ escalation of tensions.

India is locked in tension with Pakistan after 26 tourists were killed in an attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Tuesday.

The Indian government said the attack had “cross-border” links to Pakistan, a charge Islamabad denies.

On Thursday night, Indian soldiers and Pakistani troops exchanged fire along the line of control (LoC) in disputed Kashmir as ties between the two neighboring countries have plunged to their lowest level in years following the deadly shooting in Pahalgam.

The UN urged both Pakistan and India to show restraint.

In a post on his X account on Friday, Araghchi said, “Tehran stands ready to use its good offices in Islamabad and New Delhi to forge greater understanding at this difficult time.”

Iran's foreign minister described India and Pakistan as brotherly neighbors of Iran with relations rooted in centuries-old cultural and civilizational ties.

“Like other neighbors, we consider them our foremost priority,” Araghchi wrote.

He emphasized that Iran’s mediation offer comes in line with the spirit taught by Persian poet Saadi:

"Human Beings are members of a whole

In creation of one essence and soul

If one member is inflicted with pain

Other members uneasy will remain"

Islamabad accused New Delhi of failing to provide proper evidence that the government bears any responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan warned that any Indian attempt to suspend a landmark water-sharing treaty would be met with “full force".

The two sides have hinted that the tension could escalate to military action.

Since the partition in 1947, Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan with both claiming full sovereignty over the Muslim-majority territory, also disputed with China.
