Human rights turned into political tool in hands of West: Iran FM
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has denounced the West’s approach to human rights, saying Western countries have turned the issue into a tool for their own political gain.
Araghchi made the remarks while visiting a painting exhibition titled “Minab School” in Tehran, featuring paintings related to the massacre of school children and staff on the first day of the US-Israeli war against Iran on February 28.
In the most horrific crime, 168 schoolgirls and schoolboys between the ages of 7 and 12, as well as 26 teachers, were killed and more than 96 others injured when the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in the southern city of Minab was struck twice by United States missiles as 264 students were attending classes.
“Human rights have been turned into a political tool in the hands of Western countries, which exploit them for political purposes and attach no real value to human rights,” Araghchi said.
“Human rights are here,” he added, referring to the exhibition.
If other countries want to see and understand the true meaning of human rights, they should visit the exhibition and comprehend its works, he emphasized.
The top diplomat noted that Iran had lost the children of the Minab school, but in fact they had become “legends of heroism” for the Iranian people.
"The Minab school and its children have become an epic for the Iranian people, and we will neither forget this epic, nor forgive, nor overlook it and we will always pursue it,” he reiterated.
Araghchi also expressed hope that the exhibition could be taken to other countries, if they allow it to be displayed and can “bear” seeing the consequences of injustices committed against humanity.
The Iranian foreign minister further asserted the country’s “very clean” position on human rights, saying, “We genuinely believe in human rights in Iran and have consistently defended the rights of the Iranian people.”
He emphasized that Iran would not allow other countries to exploit the issue of human rights for political purposes.
