The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has condemned in the strongest terms Israel’s recent “heinous crime” of striking the UN headquarters in central Gaza.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Hamas said the attack was a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.”

Hamas accused Israel of escalating its “war of extermination” across the besieged Palestinian territory.

The Palestinian group said it was part of Israel’s “systematic policy” to target civilians and aid workers. Such brutal actions aim to “terrorize” them and worsen the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, Hamas said.

The strike on the UN facility in Deir al-Balah killed at least one UN international worker and injured five others.

The statement also said Israel had already killed hundreds of UNRWA and relief workers in Gaza since October 7, 2023, in a desperate attempt to “tighten the siege” and deprive the Palestinians of basic necessities.

Hamas also censured the “disturbing international silence” toward the Israeli campaign of genocide in Gaza.

The group called on the UN and the international community to take a “clear and decisive stance” against Israel.

Elsewhere in the statement, Hamas urged an urgent intervention to lift the blockade of Gaza.

Separately, Gaza’s Government Media Office issued a statement denouncing Israel for the attack on the UN center.

“This crime,” it said, “[is] part of a deliberate policy targeting UN and humanitarian institutions to prevent them from fulfilling their duty to assist the Palestinian people.”

“We call on the United Nations to take a clear and strong stance regarding this crime, and to act immediately” to hold Israel accountable, the office added, while calling for an “urgent international investigation.”

Gaza’s health ministry has said Israel killed around 970 Palestinians, mostly women and children, in a matter of 48 hours.

This brings the Palestinian fatalities since October 7, 2023, to 49,547.

The White House says Israel’s new attacks on Gaza are in coordination with the Trump administration.

Hamas says the Israeli regime should be forced to stop the aggression and embark on talks regarding the second phase of the signed truce agreement.
