Canada’s next PM: We cannot let Trump and his trade war win

Canada’s newly-elected prime minister says his country will stand strong against US President Donald Trump and his trade war.

Mark Carney, former governor of the Canadian central bank and Bank of England, won the race to the Liberal Party’s leadership on Sunday and succeeded Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister.

Trudeau resigned following nearly a decade in office after facing internal pressure over unpopularity with voters, who were frustrated with the rising cost of living and a housing crisis.

During most of his victory speech, Carney attacked Trump, who has imposed tariffs on Canada, pointing out that the US president wants to make Canada the 51st US state.

“Donald Trump has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell, on how we earn a living. He is attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses. We cannot let him succeed and we will not,” he said, warning that his administration will not back down from the trade war and will keep the new tariffs on the US products.

“My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect … And make credible, reliable commitments to free and fair trade,” he added.

The US imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods last Tuesday, but backtracked within days in order to exempt goods compliant with an existing trade agreement.

Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs of its own as Trudeau accused his US counterpart of trying to collapse Canada’s economy.

Carney also criticized Trump’s comments that Canada is a subsidiary of the US and that he will make the country the 51st state of the US.

“America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.”

“I know these are dark days,” he said. “Dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust.”

He also pledged to “secure our borders,” a key demand of Trump, who has accused Canada of failing to control the flow of migrants and fentanyl going south.

The Canadian prime minister-elect also attacked Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party and his main opponent during the next election. He called Poilievre “a person who worships at the altar of Donald Trump.”
