Rejecting Trump's threats

Hamas has described the US President, Donald Trump’s threats as ‘worthless’, stressing that no Israeli captives will be freed without a deal. Senior spokesman, Sami Abu Zuhri pointed out that if any threats are to be made, they should be directed at those who refuse to implement the ceasefire deal. He said Hamas remains committed to the agreement and is determined to continue on this path. He underscored that the threats not only fail to intimidate them but also further complicate the situation. Hamas had also earlier said that Trump’s threats will only encourage the Israeli regime to not abide by the ceasefire agreement. The reactions came after Trump threatened that there will be ‘ hell to pay’ if Hamas refuses to release all the remaining captives immediately.

Gaza humanitarian crisis

The United Nations Children’s Fund says the Israeli regime’s blockade of Gaza will have devastating consequences. The aid group said the siege is threatening lifesaving healthcare services for children including newborns. It said the existing supplies have already been largely distributed throughout the enclave. The UNICEF said the needs are so high that aid groups have not been able to stockpile goods during the 42-day truce. Other rights groups have also warned about the deteriorating situation. The World Food Program says its Gaza food stockpile will last only two weeks. The Norwegian Refugee Council has also highlighted severe tent shortages, saying that infants are dying from cold. Israel has blocked the delivery of all aid to Gaza since Sunday.

The war in Ukraine

The European Union leaders have agreed to ramp up defense spending saying the bloc has to put Ukraine in a position to protect itself. Von der Leyen said a new plan named “re-arm” Europe will provide 800 billion Euros for defense investment including spending on Ukrainian military. Separately, German Chancellor warned against any dictated peace in Ukraine echoing similar remarks by other European leaders. The remarks come ahead of emergency talks between EU member states on ways to quickly increase military budgets. This comes after the US signaled that Europe must take care of its own security. The Trump administration suspended assistance to Ukraine as it continues pressing Kiev to negotiate with Russia on ending the war.
