Lapid to Netanyahu: ‘Jews’ greatest disaster since Holocaust will always belong to you'

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has hit out at the regime’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the handling of the Gaza war and the setbacks the occupation suffered in its months-long aggression on the besieged territory in the face of straggles by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

Lapid’s diatribe came after a fiery speech by Netanyahu during an Israeli parliament (Knesset)’s session addressing both the opposition’s call for a Commission of Inquiry into the regime’s failures to repel the October 7 retaliatory attack by the Gaza-based resistance groups and the ongoing situation with Hamas.

“The greatest disaster that has happened to the Jewish people since the Holocaust belongs to you. It will always belong to you,” Lapid said.

“Any person on whose watch this disaster happened would take it with him to his grave until his last day,” he said, adding that Netanyahu’s cabinet had “so many reasons to ask for forgiveness.

Stressing that Israelis were “in pain, anxious, angry,” as they had been abandoned by a regime that “takes no responsibility for anything,” Lapid said, “Ask for forgiveness from them.”

The Israeli opposition leader also took a jab at Netanyahu for losing his temper while being heckled and booed during his speech at the Knesset.

“Prime Minister, you once gave me good advice: never lose your temper at the podium. I propose to give this advice to you. It was not an easy performance to watch,” he said.

In a thread of posts on X, Israeli newspaper Haaretz also snapped at the regime’s prime minister and threw its weight behind Lapid’s anti-Netanyahu tirade.

“Netanyahu throws plenty of blame around in hysterical Knesset speech/temper tantrum railing against establishing a state Commission of Inquiry into the events of October 7,” the paper said.

“Opposition leader Yair Lapid responded to Netanyahu's accusations and disclosed that in the past, the prime minister advised him to ‘Never lose your temper on the stand,’” it added. “Lapid called Netanyahu's speech "a spectacle not easy to watch," and said the combat soldiers deserve a prime minister ‘who doesn't lose his nerves over nonsense.’”

Addressing the topic of the Commission of Inquiry at the Knesset, Netanyahu stressed the importance of conducting “objective, balanced, and independent” investigations into the October 7 attacks, and criticized the opposition for pushing for an inquiry with predetermined conclusions.

He also emphasized his cabinet’s resolve to continue engagement in securing the Israeli captives held in Gaza and dealing with the internal political debates surrounding the handling of the October 7 events.

Israel launched its brutal Gaza onslaught on October 7, 2023, after the Hamas resistance group carried out a historic operation against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Tel Aviv failed to achieve its declared objectives in Gaza despite killing at least 48,388 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

The occupying regime accepted Hamas’s longstanding negotiation terms under a Gaza ceasefire, which began on January 19.
