Lebanese government must show it can expel Israeli occupiers: Lawmaker
Lebanese lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah says the government must demonstrate its ability to expel the occupation forces and protect the sovereignty of the Arab country, after the Israeli regime said it intends to remain in southern Lebanon beyond a 60-day deadline stipulated in a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah.
“Hezbollah is giving the state the opportunity to fulfill its duties, but it must demonstrate its ability to expel the occupation, prevent further attacks, secure the release of prisoners, rebuild, and protect sovereignty,” Fadlallah said on Sunday.
He said, “True patriotism and loyalty to Lebanon are reflected in one’s commitment to South Lebanon’s sacred cause.”
Fadlallah further noted that it is time for the Lebanese government to recognize the ongoing Israeli attacks, which stretch from the southern border to the farthest reaches of Bekaa Valley.
“Have they not realized that our sovereignty, dignity, and national identity are being undermined,” he added.
Falallah further said that southern Lebanon welcomes any official visiting its towns and villages, stressing that listening to the people’s concerns may prompt reconsidering the officials’ decisions and policies.
After experiencing substantial losses during almost 14 months of hostilities and not accomplishing its aims in its offensive against Lebanon, Israel had no choice but to accept a ceasefire with the Hezbollah resistance movement. The truce came into effect on November 27.
Since the start of the agreement though, the occupation forces have been conducting near-daily attacks on Lebanon in violation of the ceasefire, including airstrikes across the Arab country.
Hezbollah has placed the responsibility on the Lebanese government to guarantee the complete withdrawal of Israeli military forces from southern Lebanon.
On January 27, Lebanon announced its agreement to prolong the ceasefire with Israel until February 18.
This decision comes despite the Israeli military's failure to adhere to a deadline for troop withdrawal and the reported fatalities of nearly two dozen individuals in the southern region of the country.
