Russia says its anti-air defense systems have neutralized 31 Ukrainian drones deep inside Russia.
Russia's Ministry of Defense said on Monday that the country’s anti-air defense systems naturalized 31 Ukrainian drones targeting industrial complexes deep inside Russia.
“Last night, anti-air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 31 Ukrainian drones,” the ministry said on Telegram.
“There was an attempted attack by enemy drones” to target “industrial enterprises” in Tatarstan, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) from the Ukrainian border, the regional government said.
“All the drones were neutralized. There were no victims or damage,” it said, without further elaboration.
In the southwest of Moscow in the Kaluga region, debris from a downed drone sparked a fire at a business but it was quickly put out, regional governor Vladislav Shapsha said.
The regional governor of Bryansk, which borders Ukraine, said Russia’s anti-air defense systems downed 14 drones and also four HIMARS missiles.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously warned Ukraine that Russia will target the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev with a hypersonic ballistic missile in response to any attack on Russian soil.
On Sunday, the Ukrainian Air Force claimed it had shot down 43 Russian drones targeting 9 regions over Ukraine.
Russian drone strikes on Ukraine reached record levels at the end of 2024, with Moscow planning to further increase its production of UAVs in 2025.
Both Kiev and Moscow have been trying to get the upper hand in the conflict, ahead of Trump’s inauguration on Monday. Trump has said on numerous occasions that he wants to end the conflict early in his presidency.
Both countries view these attacks as a demonstration of their capability to target critical infrastructure deep within each other’s territory, which in turn may affect the result of any potential ceasefire negotiation in the near future.
