The United Nations Security Council has deplored the recent terrorist attack on a police convoy in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan Province that killed 10 law enforcement personnel.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the 15-member body "condemned in the strongest terms" Saturday's "cowardly terrorist attack on a patrol unit of the Law Enforcement Command of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Goharkooh region of the city of Taftan."

It also offered the deepest sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families, as well as the Iranian people and government over the tragedy.

"The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice," the statement read.

"They urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as all other relevant authorities in this regard."

Meanwhile, the Security Council stressed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terror are criminal and unjustifiable.

It further underlined the need for "all States to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law,... threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts."

The so-called Jaish al-Adl terrorist group claimed responsibility for the deadly ambush on Iranian police vehicles.

The foreign-backed terror outfit, based in Pakistan, has been involved in numerous assaults targeting both civilians and security forces across the border province of Sistan and Baluchestan in the past several years.
