Torture, hunger, humiliation: Freed Palestinians recount Israeli jail conditions

Al-Aqsa Hospital in Gaza received another group of Palestinian abductees on Wednesday after their release from Israeli jails. They recounted suffering due to abuse and inhuman treatment at the hands of jailers.

The Palestinians displayed injuries they suffered as a result of beating by the Israelis.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) says its teams have treated 13 people, including an elderly woman, who were released at the Kissufim checkpoint in central Gaza.

Upon arrival at the hospital in Deir el-Balah, one of the Palestinians said a number of inmates had lost their senses as a result of electric shocks they were subjected to.

Mustafa Fayyad is one of the freed Palestinians. He recounted hard times due to lack of sleep and food. Fayyad was tortured more than once.

Nader Asaliya, another released Palestinian, is blind. “They treated us inhumanely inside prisons and called us dogs. We were subjected to all kinds of torture, hunger and humiliation.”

Israel has already released dozens of Palestinians, including the director of Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, one of the strip’s major hospitals.

The released Palestinians and human rights lawyers recount absolutely disturbing testimonies of the worst forms of torture and ill-treatment by Israeli forces since October. Evidence also exists in video footage containing barbarous behavior demonstrated by Israeli troops.

In the occupied West Bank, similar accounts of torture have already been documented from decades of Israeli hostility.

In June, Israel announced relocating Palestinians from Sde Teiman, a former military base in the Negev desert, after groups demanded the closure of the site.

At least 18 Palestinians have died in Israeli jails since October.
