European Union foreign policy Chief Josep Borrell has warned against further escalation of violence in West Asia, following US airstrikes in Iraq and Syria.
Borrell made the comments at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Saturday after the US air force attacked dozens of targets in Iraq and Syria during the night.
US President Joe Biden said on Friday that the strikes were the first in a series of actions in response to a drone attack that killed several soldiers at a remote US base in Jordan.
Borrel warned that West Asia “is a boiler that can explode.”
“And certainly, there are attacks both on the Lebanon border; north and south; there are attacks in Syria; there are attacks in Iraq, attacks in the Red Sea.”
"That's why we call everybody to try to avoid an escalation," he said.
Iraq and Syria denounced deadly strikes against their sovereignty, with the Syrian Defense Ministry saying that Washington’s assault is aimed at reviving the Daesh terrorist group in the two neighboring countries.
