Israel political crisis

Thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets of Tel Aviv for the 31st week in a row to protest against the hard-right cabinet’s judicial overhaul. Local media says demonstrations were also organized in approximately 150 locations throughout the occupied territories. The highly disputed reform package has triggered one of the biggest protest movements in Israel's history since being unveiled in January by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition cabinet. Last week, thousands of Israeli army reservists threatened not to show up for duty. The regime's parliament passed the first key component of the reform package last month, which limits the Supreme Court's powers on some government decisions. Opponents say the legislation would lead to a more authoritarian regime. The plan has also seen some backlash from Israel’s allies, including the United States.

Coup in Niger

Niger's ousted prime minister says he is still hopeful that the situation will go back to normal through diplomacy after the military takeover in the country. The premier said he expects President Mohamed Bazoum to be reinstated and all institutions allegedly dissolved to be restored. This, as the West African regional bloc, known as ECOWAS, has drawn up a plan for military action if the coup leaders do not reinstate Bazoum by Sunday. However, there is mounting opposition against the intervention plan in ECOWAS countries. Political leaders in Nigeria have warned against the military intervention. Mali and Burkina Faso, which are both run by military rulers, have already said intervention in Niger would be considered a declaration of war on them.

Russia-Ukraine war

Russia has struck a Ukrainian key infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia after Kiev targeted a Russian tanker on Friday. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Russian strike had targeted a maker of plane and helicopter engines. The factory is a strategic firm under the control of Ukraine's defense ministry. Zelensky tried to downplay the attack by saying such strikes will do nothing for Moscow. Ukraine has reportedly hit a Russian tanker with a naval drone in the Kerch Strait in the Black Sea. A source in Ukraine's security service said the vessel was transporting fuel for Russian troops. The attack happened near a strategic bridge linking Russia to the Crimean Peninsula.
