US 'unlawful' economic warfare
Tehran says the US announcement of new economic sanctions on Iran amounts to an attempt to impose extra-territorial sovereignty over independent UN member states. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei wrote on X that the new sanctions go far beyond continued unlawful economic warfare against a single country. He was responding to threats by the Trump administration to impose 'the toughest sanctions in history against Iran'. Baghaei said no state has the right to force foreign banks, businesses or airports to abandon legal commerce with a third state. He described the US measures as a recipe for an abysmal return to full-scale classic colonialism, warning that they will lead to the erosion of the principle of national sovereignty as the foundation of the UN-based international system. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Washington’s economic sanctions against Tehran are doomed to fail, just like previous American coercive measures.
Israel Lebanon aggression
Israel has carried out heavy shelling and demolition operations in southern Lebanon, further violating the ceasefire agreement. According to local news agencies, Israeli forces shelled several regions, including the town of Al-Mansouri, areas around Beit al-Sayyad, and the outskirts of Majdal Zoun. The Israeli army also carried out extensive demolition operations in the towns of Haddatha, Beit Yahoun, and Aita al-Jabal, along with machine-gun fire toward nearby valleys. Separately, regime forces carried out an airstrike near the Ali al-Tahir heights. Israeli drones were also reported flying continuously over southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s Health Ministry says the death toll from Israeli attacks has risen to more than 8,900, with over 30,500 people injured since early March.
US-Canada trade row
Trade talks between the US and Canada have collapsed. Now with the breakdown, a fresh wave of 50-percent US tariffs on a wide range of Canadian products comes into effect. The Canadian prime minister announced the suspension of negotiations. Mark Carney said last-minute changes in Washington’s proposed terms were unfair and uneconomic. He called into question the reliability of any deal, saying that Ottawa will match the tariffs dollar for dollar. The other side, Washington, has also reacted to the breakdown of talks. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada has declined to finalize the deal and upended the balance reached during the negotiations. US President Donald Trump had warned that he will impose a new 50-percent tariff at 12:00 AM Eastern time on Saturday if a deal is not reached. The US buys around 70 percent of Canadian goods.
