China US warning
China has warned that US military aid to Taiwan is turning the self-ruled island into a powder keg and escalating the threat of war in the region. Beijing says the US military support will not shake its resolve to reunify Taiwan with mainland China. The US has announced 345 million dollars worth of weapons, ammunition, and training for Taiwan. It is the Biden administration’s first major package drawing on America’s own stockpiles to help Taiwan counter China. That's in addition to nearly 19 billion dollars in sales of F-16s and other major weapons that the US has approved for Taiwan. China claims the island as its own territory. Although the US officially adheres to the One-China Policy, it maintains close ties with Taiwan and continues to supply it with weapons and equipment.
Russia-Ukraine war
Russia says it has repelled multiple drone attacks by Ukraine targeting different parts of the country. According to the Russian defense ministry, three unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down over Moscow. One of them was downed by air defense systems on the city’s outskirts. The other two were targeted using electronic warfare before smashing into an office complex. In another incident, Russian forces thwarted a Ukrainian attempt to strike the Crimea region with 25 drones overnight. Russia says it destroyed 16 of the unmanned aerial vehicles. The Kremlin has dismissed the strikes as an attempted terrorist attack. The drone strikes reportedly had no casualties.
Niger coup
West African leaders are scheduled to hold an emergency meeting today in an effort to restore constitutional authority in Niger after last week's military coup. The meeting in Nigeria will bring together the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States and the West African Economic and Monetary Union. They could suspend Niger from their institutions and cut its relations with the regional central bank. They also could consider a military intervention in the country. Niger's junta has warned against any military action. On Wednesday, the head of Niger’s presidential guard, General Abdourahmane Tchiani declared himself the new leader of the country after toppling President Bazoum. The coup has been widely condemned in the world.
