Finland joins NATO
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has announced that Finland will join the US-led military alliance on Tuesday. In response to the announcement, Russia’s deputy foreign minister said his country would strengthen its military capacity in its western and northwestern regions. Finland, alongside Sweden, applied to join the alliance last year following the eruption of the war in Ukraine. The bids came despite Russia’s warnings against the eastward expansion of NATO near its borders. Moscow has blamed NATO’s policy for launching its military campaign in Ukraine. The war which is in its second year rages as NATO members continue to supply Kiev with weapons in defiance of Moscow's warning that it would just prolong the conflict.
