‘Talks with US will resolve nothing’

The Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution has rejected negotiations with the United States saying talks with Washington would not bear any fruit. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said Iran’s problems with America can only be resolved by letting Washington hold Iranians to ransom. The leader warned that in order to put an end to antagonism, the US wants Iran to abandon its nuclear program, change its constitution and restrict its influence within its borders. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei added no Iranian can accept such conditions. He made the comments in an address to a group of Basij force members in the capital Tehran. The Leader said the Basij force should be well aware of the country’s main enemy, which is global arrogance. Ayatollah Khamenei added the enemies are trying to spread lies and fake news and paint a dark picture of Iran. That’s because the US wants to dominate the minds of the Iranian people. Ayatollah Khamenei referred to the victory of Iran's Islamic revolution in 1979 and said the revolution tipped the balance against the favor of arrogant powers in West Asia, dealing a heavy blow to their colonialist policies. The leader added that the creation of the usurper Israeli regime was in line with those policies to maintain dominance over the region.

US Syria base under attack

The US military says one of its bases in northeast Syria has come under a rocket attack, the third such attack in nine days. Two rockets reportedly targeted a patrol base in Al-Shaddadi late Friday. We don't know who fired the rockets, but we know they caused no injuries or damage to the base. Hundreds of American troops are still in Syria as part of what the US calls the fight against remnants of the Daesh terrorist group. American troops in the region support Kurdish militants. Over a week ago, rockets targeted America’s green village base, which is in Syria’s largest oil field, al-Omar. According to the US military, a Turkish drone strike this week killed two Kurdish militants and posed a risk to US troops in northeast Syria. Attacks on US military bases in the region, mainly in Iraq, have increased over the past several years as anti-American sentiments run high.

Venezuela political talks

Delegations of the Venezuelan government and opposition are in Mexico to sign an agreement after months of informal meetings. The government delegation is led by congressional leader Jorge Rodriguez. The opposition is headed by politician Gerardo Blyde. The Norway-mediated talks aim to break a bitter impasse between President Nicolas Maduro’s government and the divided opposition. A deal could help ease US oil sanctions on Venezuela and boost oil major Chevron's activity there. The opposition sees the talks as a way out of a prolonged political crisis before the 2024 presidential election. The crisis gripped the South American nation after the 2019 elections, which were won by Maduro amid an electoral boycott by US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido. The US and its European allies have imposed a number of sanctions on Venezuela ever since.
