Lebanon, Israel sign maritime deal

Lebanon has formally signed a sea border deal that would demarcate its southern maritime border. The final paperwork was submitted to the United Nations in Naqura, south lebanon, concluding a long path of indirect negotiations with the Israeli regime.
Hezbollah’s Secretary General stressed in a brief statement that the deal is a victory for Lebanon’s government, people, and resistance declaring the end of exceptional state of high alert for the resistance.
US envoy Amos Hochstein who was with the Lebanese delegation in the southern Lebanese town of Naqura had met the top Lebanese officials.
Experts believe this agreement would put Lebanon on the map of oil exporters.
President Michel Aoun stressed in a statement that demarcating the southern maritime border is a technical matter that has no political implications and therefore no diplomatic bonds.
US President Joe Biden has hailed the maritime border deal as a “historic breakthrough.” For Lebanon, it unlocks the possibility to exploit its own resources at a time when the West is seeking gas suppliers and trying to find alternatives to Russian gas.
