International Quds Day

Millions of Iranians have turned out on the International Quds Day as part of global rallies to mark the event and voice support for the Palestinian people. Demonstrators have also filled the streets in other countries to mark the occasion. The annual event was launched by the late founder of Iran’s Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, in 1979. It is held on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, and in some countries, on the last Sunday of the month. The International Quds Day is aimed at drawing attention to the plight of the Palestinian people, whose land is occupied by Israel for decades now. Demonstrators on the Quds day denounce the occupation and Israel’s atrocities against Palestinians.

Israeli violence at al-Aqsa Mosque

Israeli forces have once again attacked Palestinian worshipers at the al-Aqsa mosque compound. So far, at least 42 Palestinians have been confirmed injured. Israeli police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at Palestinian youths, who responded by hurling stones. Tensions have remained high in the occupied Palestinian territories over the past several weeks. The situation is particularly tense in al-Quds, where the al-Aqsa Mosque compound is located. Israeli troops have on various occasions attacked Palestinian worshipers there, as they gathered for prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. The desecration of the mosque has drawn widespread condemnation, with Palestinian resistance groups promising a strong response.

US anti-Iran sanctions

The US keeps intensifying its anti-Iran sanctions. Now the house of representatives has passed a bill to prevent Iran and its allies from acquiring drones. The bipartisan legislation dubbed "Stop Iranian Drones Act" was approved on Wednesday. It authorizes the government to blacklist persons and entities working to advance Iran’s drone capabilities. Pro-Israel lobbies in the US have hailed the legislation which will become law once it is approved by the senate and signed by President Joe Biden. This comes as the Vienna talks to revive the JCPOA remain stalled amid excessive US demands. Iran has, time and again, called on Washington to show its real will to resolve outstanding issues in order to revive the 2015 deal. Tehran wants the US to remove its sanctions in a verifiable way and guarantee that it would not abandon the deal again as it did in 2018.
