A knife-wielding man has attacked passengers on an express train in southern Germany, leaving several people injured.

The assault occurred on the train between the cities of Regensburg and Nuremberg on Saturday. “According to preliminary information, several people were injured,” police in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz said in a statement. “There was no more danger,” it stated, adding that “police shortly afterwards arrested a male person.”

According to local media, at least three people had been hurt, two of them seriously. Police said none of them had suffered life-threatening injuries.

“This knife attack is horrible,” Interior Minister Horst Seehofer wrote on Twitter. “The motive for the crime is still unclear and will now be determined.”

It has been a tense time in Germany, deeply alarmed by a surge in hate crimes.

Authorities reported at least 2,275 hate crimes until the end of January 2021, among them 55 acts of violence.
