Iran warning

A senior advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution warns that any new US or Israeli attack could expand the battlefield beyond the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Yahya Rahim Safavi said lasting regional security requires the participation of regional states rather than outside powers. He said Iran and Yemen share common interests and face common threats, while stressing that Tehran does not seek war but is prepared to respond to any renewed attack. Safavi also said Iran will retain control and management of the Strait of Hormuz while allowing vessels from countries such as China to transit the strategic waterway. He added that Iran and Oman had reached an understanding on maritime passage through the strait, but accused Washington of obstructing the arrangement.

Rejecting US threats

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has slammed Donald Trump’s threat of annihilation of Iran, saying that Washington is seeking to impose its will though force while violating international and humanitarian laws. Iran’s president made the remarks following the conclusion of the first day of his trip to New York. He is there to attend the UN General Assembly meeting. He held several meetings with several top officials on the sidelines of the summit. In a meeting with the European Council President Antonio Costa, he called on European countries to reconsider their policies and safeguard their independence. Pezeshkian said European countries’ inaction and alignment with hostile US measures, including their actions over the snapback mechanism and the JCPOA, have caused them to lose their influence over international developments. On Wednesday, Pezeshkian addressed the UNGA, blaming the US and Israel for global instability.

US ICE violence

Authorities in the US state of Illinois are investigating a case in which a US citizen was detained by federal immigration agents before ending up at a hospital with injuries. Police in the Chicago suburb of Evanston said that officers were called to an argument between two men just before 10 a.m. and arrived to find a man on the ground with injuries to his head, neck and teeth. Officers questioned a man in one of two SUVs who was wearing plainclothes. That person identified himself as an ICE agent. The immigration agent mistook the victim for a fugitive who had a Chicago arrest warrant. Witnesses gave a serious account of the confrontation and said an agent pin the Black man to the ground and repeatedly struck him.
