Afghan neighbors meet

A high-level meeting of Afghanistan’s neighbors is to be held in Tehran this Wednesday. Iran says the gathering aims to send a unified message of support for the Afghan people. Khatibzadeh added that participants in the Tehran meeting will also send the message that Afghanistan should not become a hotbed for terrorism, extremism and violence. He says it is unacceptable for Afghanistan to backtrack in security, social and political areas. The spokesman also highlighted the protection of people of Afghanistan and their rights as a key priority. Neighbors of Afghanistan, plus Russia, will get together in Tehran's peace conference. UN Director General, Antonio Guterres, will also deliver an online speech at the event.

Sudan coup

Protesters in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and the most populated city of Omdurman chanted slogans against military rule and burned tires. Health officials say seven people were killed and 140 others were injured in clashes between protesters and military forces. Sudan has been ruled by an interim government since the ouster of longtime president Omar al-Bashir in 2019. However, tensions have been running high between civilian and military leaders since a failed coup attempt in September.

Unequal, unaccountable world

With the number of Covid-19 deaths now nearing five million globally, an international health monitor says the world has evidently failed in its response to the pandemic. According to the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, the worldwide health emergency system needs fundamental reform. It says the pandemic has exposed just how unequal, divided and unaccountable today's world is. The Board is an independent body established by the World Health Organization and the World Bank. The World Health Organization has been calling for vaccines to be distributed more equitably across the globe. But, with rich countries pursuing a "Me-First approach", and encouraging third-dose booster shots for their citizens, many poor nations are still struggling to get their first doses.
