US Afghanistan exit
The US president says the evacuation of foreign troops and citizens from Afghanistan is expected to complete before the August 31 deadline. Joe Biden said any extension to the deadline risks new attacks against the foreign troops and civilians at Kabul airport. He noted that the completion of the evacuation operations depends on how much the Taliban are willing to cooperate. The US President, however, said he has asked the Pentagon to come up with contingency plans if the departures do not complete by the deadline. This followed a virtual meeting of G7 leaders on the developments in Afghanistan. They expressed support for the United Nations to coordinate humanitarian efforts in the region, which faces an influx of Afghan refugees.
Coalition rights violations
Russia says Washington is trying to convince several Central Asian countries to take in Afghans who previously worked with US forces. Sergey Lavrov said his country was ready to mediate in Afghanistan. He said it was regrettable that the European Union fears that the fall of Kabul to the Taliban is a victory for Moscow and Beijing. He said such remarks show that the bloc is obsessed with playing politics and is uninterested in the fate of ordinary Afghans. Meanwhile, China said the US army and the militaries of other coalition partners should be held accountable for alleged rights violations they committed in Afghanistan.
Syria evacuation deal
Foreign-backed militants have started leaving one of their last hideouts in Syria’s Dara’a province, under a Russian-brokered truce deal.
