Afghanistan fighting

At least 20 people have been killed in fighting between government forces and Taliban militants across Afghanistan over the past 24 hours. Afghan authorities say the Taliban have also taken control of three districts during this time. That increases to ten the number of districts that have fallen to the militants in the past three days. The fighting comes as the government and the Taliban are engaged in talks to bring lasting peace to Afghanistan. On Tuesday, they began fresh negotiations in Qatar, after talks stalled in April. Amid the peace efforts, violence has surged in Afghanistan. In the latest incident, gunmen killed four vaccination workers and injured several others in the eastern Nangarhar province.

Tigray famine crisis

The United Nations has warned that famine in Ethiopia’s war-torn Tigray region is getting worse. The UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs warned famine in Tigray could also spread to two other regions. In his remarks at the Security Council, Mark Lowcock said more than 2.3 million people are either living in famine conditions or are only a step away. Ethiopia has disputed the figures, and says aid groups have been granted access to those in need. The country has also said the situation in Tigray is a matter of domestic politics. The northern region has witnessed fighting between government forces and those loyal to regional leaders since November last year. Thousands have been killed and many more displaced as a result.

Peru presidential polls

Peruvian socialist candidate Pedro Castillo has claimed victory in the presidential run-off held on June 6. Castillo hailed his victory on Twitter, clinging to a narrow lead over his right-wing rival Keiko Fujimori. Vote counting has ended. But official results have not been announced yet. Fujimori has rejected her rival’s claim of victory. She has made allegations of fraud with little proof. Fujimori has told supporters that she will keep fighting to defend Peru's democracy. The South American country is currently struggling with an economic recession triggered by the pandemic.
