Reformist presidential candidate Mohsen Mehr-Alizadeh says a competitive economy can bolster production and consequently help contain rising prices, pledging that he will eliminate the root causes of inflation “within three to four months” if he is elected president.

Mehr-Alizadeh on Friday criticized the administration’s 60-percent-plus share of the country’s economy and said that figure should be lowered to at most 20-25 percent within a four-year period.

The former vice president stressed the need for facilitating economic activity in the country and said, “If the economy becomes competitive, production will see a boost, and inflation will thus be curbed.”

When the inflation is brought under control, so will the fluctuations in prices, said the candidate, adding that those stages had to be passed in order to for his potential administration to achieve its objectives.

“We hope that we will be able to get this done via the right model that we will use. We will definitely get this done,” he added.

Mehr-Alizadeh said he and his team had worked on developing a model for economic development while taking advantage of the world’s already-tested scientific principles under the title of “social economy.”

Explaining social economy, he said “this model enables the country’s economy to make headway, but it does not leave the poor to be crushed under the heavy wheels of the development and growth process.”

“Social economy can provide the people with the basics of a social life, without hampering development,” Mehr-Alizadeh added.

The candidate said if he won the June 18 election, he would immediately take a set of measures to “eliminate the root causes of inflation within three to four months,” under which he would move to remove the obstacles in the way of production, get rid of what he called “hidden subsidies,” and make reforms to the banking system.
