Ali Larijani served as speaker of Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) from 2008 to 2020. Larijani is largely associated with the Principlist camp, while some believe he is closer to the Reformists. He has said he will be running in the June 18 presidential election “independently.”

Larijani was the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council from 2005 to 2007, when he tendered his resignation to the then-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. In that capacity, he functioned as the country’s top negotiator on national security issues, including the nuclear dossier.

Formerly, he was also a military officer with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

Born in the holy Iraqi city of Najaf, Larijani holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Western philosophy.

Among his other former posts are deputy minister of information and communications technology and head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

He ran for president in the 2005 election, in which he ranked sixth.

‘Foreign policy at the service of domestic economic plans’

After signing up for the upcoming presidential race, Larijani emphasized the need for bringing about stronger unity and convergence in the nation in order to pave the way for resolving Iran’s issues.

He highlighted the significance of achieving economic independence and said a leap in domestic production would only be possible if there was stability and balance on the international stage.

Larijani also said it was important to address the complex international issues related to Iran, warning that their prolongation would harm people’s livelihoods.

“Foreign policy’s main goal should be facilitating foreign relations in line with country’s economic developments,” he added.

“The nation’s fate and [the duty of bringing about] calm in the people’s livelihoods should be put in the hands of skilled individuals and resolute youth,” Larijani said.
