Pressure mounts on EU to hold Israel accountable

The European Union calls for greater efforts to progress peace negotiations in the West Asia as Israel's deadly attacks on Palestinian territories continues.

Since Tel Aviv's lawless and horrific attacks began almost a week ago, literally dozens of rights groups, civil society organisations, trade unions and legislators in the EU have issued statements condemning the regime's actions. But calls on the EU to take firm action against Israel have been dodged, as usual.

Those who have attended three separate protests in Brussels since Wednesday insist words from EU leaders are not enough.

Campaigners say the atrocities being committed by Israel against Palestinians only make the headlines in the West when bombs are involved. They highlight how the persecution is much broader than that.

The latest data from the European Commission shows that trade between the 27-nation bloc and Israel was worth €31bn last year. Palestinian rights activists and many lawmakers are again calling on the EU to suspend trade ties with the regime.

So far those calls have fallen on deaf ears. Rights campaigners say that's because too much money is involved and because Washington has too much influence over EU foreign policy.
