Trump playing up to Zionist base with Iran sanctions: Analyst

J.Michael Springmann

President Donald Trump's administration has imposed additional sanctions on Iran to play up to his Zionist base in the United States, according to a former US diplomat.

The Trump administration imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran in a last-ditch attempt to ramp up pressure on the Islamic Republic.

J. Michael Springmann, a former US diplomat in Saudi Arabia and current expert on international relations, told Press TV in an interview on Friday that the anti-Iran sanctions proved Trump was serving the Zionists' interests.

"He is doing this simply because he is playing up to his Zionist base in the United States," he said.

Trump's anti-Iran stance appeases "his Zionist advisers, like his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and to a number of other people, such as the American ambassador to Israel and to other Jews," he added.

"He is also playing up to his Christian and Anglican base. They are essentially Christian Zionists. And, he is playing up to Israel with whom he is great and good friends. He has been tight with the Israelis and the Jews since he was a businessman in New York," he noted.

Trump was not only serving Israel's interests, in general, but the interests of rich Zionists, in particular, Springmann said.

"Additionally, I think he is serving the interest of rich Jews like Sheldon Adelson, who has funded his campaign with quite a substantial amount of money," he said, adding, "So basically, he is playing up to his Zionist supporters."

Springmann said there was no chance that if Joe Biden takes office in January, he would reverse this anti-Iran stance pursued by Trump and his predecessors. Because Biden also supports Israel, he said.

Springmann quoted Biden as sating that if the US government "didn't have Israel, we would have to invent it."

The former diplomat pointed out that Biden had threatened to take a hard line in possible negations with Iran.

He said US foreign policy pursued by any president at the helm of the country was both against Iran and "in support of the terrorist entity of Israel."
