International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi says he expects very active discussions on issues related to Iran after opening a virtual meeting of the agency’s Board of Governors.

Grossi briefed member states on the agency’s work in verifying and monitoring Iran’s implementation of the nuclear agreement, known as the JCPOA but he also provided a separate report calling on Tehran to cooperate immediately and fully by providing the agency with access to two locations on the basis of information obtained about Iran’s past nuclear activities.

Iran argues the agency’s requests for access are based on papers fabricated by Israel. Earlier in March, Iranian ambassador to the IAEA Kazem Gharib Abadi questioned the legal reasoning behind the request while making it clear Tehran does not want the issue to derail the constructive course of cooperation with the agency.

On Monday, Grossi also expressed support for continued cooperation. Reports indicate the US is seeking a decision by the Board within the next few days that could include a resolution against Tehran, an option that other members including Russia have opposed.

“Iran’s IAEA ambassador has previously called for the adoption of a more cautious approach to avoid tarnishing the bigger picture of Iran/IAEA cooperation. The Iranian foreign ministry has officially announced it hopes the current meeting leads to an outcome that would help maintain international peace and security.
