In their first appearance in the knockout stage of the Champions League, RB Leipzig have earned a deserved 1-nil victory at Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the competition's last-16.
The Bundesliga high-flyers dominated from the onset, and had the more presentable chances in the first half. Angelino flashed a shot, off the post, inside two minutes, and Timo Werner poked a shot at Hugo Lloris from close range.
Spurs somehow survived the first period, but finally conceded just shy of the hour mark, when Konrad Laimer brought Ben Davies down in the area and Werner drilled home from the penalty spot.
Spurs improved in the final 20 minutes, as Giovani Lo Celso's free kick was tipped onto the post and Lucas Moura headed over the bar late on. Last season’s runners-up, however, couldn't find a way through, and face a tough task to turn the tie around in Germany, on March the 10th.
Atalanta, meanwhile, took a massive stride toward reaching the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time after thrashing Valencia 4-1 in Italy.
The tournament debutants dominated the first half and opened the scoring after just a quarter of an hour through Dutch wing-back Hans Hateboer. Their lead was then doubled three minutes before half-time, when Josip Ilicic drilled a powerful strike into the top corner.
The hosts put the result beyond any doubt 12 minutes after the break as Remo Freuler curled in, a splendid third. The tie also appeared to have been wrapped up five minutes later, when Hateboer completed his brace but substitute Denis Cheryshev gave the Spanish visitors a faint glimmer of hope with an away goal.
Two-time runners-up Valencia will host the Serie A side at the Mestalla Stadium in the return leg in three weeks’ time.
