European foreign ministers met Friday to discuss easing tensions between Tehran and Washington. The bloc says it will spare no efforts to keep the Iran nuclear deal alive. But some leaders are throwing a spanner in the works, mainly Hungary's far-right leader Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

On the same day European Council President Charles Michel urged Tehran to comply with the 2015 agreement that was sabotaged back in May 2018 when US President Donald Trump withdrew from it and imposed fresh sanction on Tehran.

So far the EU has failed to help Tehran circumvent those sanctions.  Iran says there is still time for the EU to save the deal, although Iran is reducing its commitments to it in stages.

But is nuclear weapons what the US and Israel are really worried about? Some would say accusing Iran of attempting to develop nuclear weapons is just an excuse.

On January third, the US assassinated Iran’s top General Qassem Soleimani. On the eighth, Iran retaliated with missiles strikes on US bases in Iraq.

The international community has been rattled by the sudden spike in tensions. World leaders are urging restraint from both sides, but the atmosphere remains tense.
