Not witnesses, no documents in US Senate sham trial: Schumer

In this AFP file photo taken on December 11, 2018 US President Donald Trump (2R) talks about border security with Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) (R) and House minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as Vice President Mike Pence sits nearby in the Oval Office in Washington, DC.

The Democratic leader in the US Senate has censured the upcoming “sham trial” of President Donald Trump after he was impeached by the House.

At a press conference in New York City on Sunday, Chuck Schumer called for a “full, fair and honest” trial of the president, urging him to release the documents and allow witnesses to testify.

The GOP-controlled Senate will acquit Trump after holding a trial that the Republican leaders have said would be quick.

“What is a trial with no witnesses and no documents?” Schumer said, according to a press release from his office. “It's a sham trial. And that's why feel so strongly that there ought to be witnesses and documents.”

The New York Democrat further referred to emails recently released, showing the Trump administration pausing military aid to Ukraine and making sure that information is “closely held to those who need to know.”

The emails were released in response to a Center for Public Integrity Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request this weekend.

The emails were sent by senior White House official Michael Duffey to request that the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) pause the military aid, Trump’s quid pro quo for which he was finally impeached.

“If there was ever an argument that we need Mr. Duffey to come testify, this is that information,” Schumer said. “This email is explosive.”

The president was actually pressuring Kiev to announce they have found dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic frontrunner in the upcoming 2020 election, in which the president hopes to get reelected.

“Until we hear from the witnesses, until we get the documents, the American people will correctly assume that those blocking their testimony were aiding and abetting a cover-up, plain and simple,” Schumer said. “So I'll close by saying this: President Trump, release the emails. Let the witnesses testify. What are you afraid of?”
