It’s time for Muslims to unite for a peaceful world. This is what delegates at the 33rd edition of the Intl. Islamic Unity Conference have agreed upon.

Organized by the Iranian-based World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought, the three-day event is held on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad as a means to establish unity and synergy among Muslims.

As of every year, Iran’s president was the keynote speaker. President Hassan Rouhani said the only profiteers of division among Muslims are the foreign actors in the region.

'Ummah Unity in Defense of al-Aqsa Mosque' this is year’s theme of the conference. This is the second consecutive year that Palestine has become the focus of the Unity Conference.

This as Palestinians are living under seven decades of the Israeli occupation, which was intensified following the US’s relocation of its embassy to Jerusalem al-Quds as part of the so called deal of the century.

Coupled with the recent normalization of ties between Arab leaders and Israel, the Palestinian cause has attracted more attention by the Muslim world.

Since the onset of the Saudi war on Yemen in 2015, the United States has sold billions of dollars worth of arms to Saudi Arabia, which has killed over 15,000 Yemenis; most of them civilians. Observers believe this war is a clear example of the US seeking to benefit from pitting Muslims against each other.

Delegates at the 33rd Islamic Unity Conference believe the US and some of its allies have long been using the policy of divide and rule in the region. They believe as long as the Muslim community is fragmented, the US’s policy is a success.

Muslims from different schools of thought seem to be on the same page here. They find the root cause of their differences in foreign interests. They say this conference is a wake up call for all Muslims to set aside differences and hold on to their commonalities.
