A message in a bottle requesting a pen pal was discovered on a remote beach in southern Australia on Monday, some 50 years after being thrown into the Indian Ocean.
Nine-year-old Jyah Elliott found the bottle in the sand hills on Talia Beach on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia while his father, Paul, was fishing. Paul broke the bottle to reveal the letter inside.
Inside the bottle was a letter written by Paul Gilmore, dated November 17, 1969, stating that he was 13 years old, from England and was migrating to Melbourne - appearing to have been written from onboard the ship Fairstar on its voyage to Australia. Gilmore asked that whoever received the message to please reply.
Elliott responded, but unbeknownst to Jyah, not only did Gilmore not live in Australia, but he had moved back to the United Kingdom. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) helped track down Gilmore, who ironically was on a cruise in the Baltic.
According to the ABC, future communication between the two may involve more modern methods.
