Floods in east China's Jiangxi affect 67,000 people, cause losses of 640mn yuan

Floods triggered by a new round of heavy rain that started Friday has affected over 670,000 people and caused direct economic losses of 640 million yuan (about 93 million U.S. dollars) in east China Jiangxi Province.

The floods in seven cities and 30 counties have forced evacuation of over 20,000 people, affected about 456,000 hectares of crops, toppled 55 houses and damaged 822 others.

From 16: 00 on Saturday to 16: 00 on Sunday, the average rainfall in the province was 25.7 millimeters, with 23 counties receiving more than 100 millimeters.

In the wee hours of Sunday, the heavy downpour flooded a toll station in Yudu County, Ganzhou City, trapping four people and three vehicles. The water depth reached 1.3 meters and all entrances and exits of the station were closed.

The workers of the toll station rushed to rescue the trapped people and they were evacuated to safe place eventually.

As of 09: 30 on Sunday, the cumulative rainfall in Wantian Township, Ruijin City, Ganzhou City has exceeded 220 millimeters, flooding many villages and trapping 1,500 people. After receiving the alarm, a local armed police detachment were dispatched to the rescue the trapped people.

As of 18:00 on Sunday, all trapped people were evacuated to safe places.

Heavy rain also lashed Shangyou County, Ganzhou City during this weekend. The water level of Yangming Lake was over-alarming, and the water level of Shangyoujiang Reservoir and Nanhe Reservoir rose rapidly.

In order to ensure the safe operation of the reservoirs and the safety of people's lives and property, from 08: 30 on Saturday, the Shangyou river hydro-power plant started flood discharge at 950 cubic meters per second, and the Nanhe reservoir also discharged flood at 1020 cubic meters per second.
