Anger at US injustice

Press TV anchor Marzieh Hashemi, who was recently freed after 11 days of detention in the US, has condemned the American judicial system for the way she was treated. Hashemi said the US wants to intimidate everyone who stands against it. The African American journalist pledged to speak the truth as long as she is able to. She also urged everyone to stand up against injustice. She made the comments during a rally in Washington DC. Demonstrators held signs and chanted slogans against the country’s judicial system. They demanded answers as to why she was detained. Similar rallies were also held in other US cities as well as in a number of other countries including Canada, the UK, Australia and Pakistan.

Israel al-Quds killing

Israeli police have fatally shot a Palestinian man in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian media say the incident took place in Jerusalem al-Quds early Saturday after the Israeli police opened fire at the victim’s vehicle. The slain Palestinian was identified as Riyad Mohammad Shamasneh. The Israeli police claim they opened fired at a suspicious car after the driver ignored their order and refused to stop the vehicle. The Israeli military regularly opens fatal fire on Palestinians, accusing them of seeking to attack its personnel.

France protests

Yellow vest protesters are holding yet another weekly demonstration across France against President Emmanuel Macron’s policies. More than two months after starting their protests over fuel tax hikes, the yellow vest activists remain mobilized and have called for an 11th straight weekend of rallies. Meanwhile, anti-yellow vest groups also plan counter demonstrations. Over 80,000 people took to the streets last weekend. At least 10 people have been killed and some 2,000 others have been injured since the protests began in November. The demonstrations often descended into violence with clashes between police and yellow vest activists.

Palestinian funeral

Palestinians have laid to rest a young man killed by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip on Friday. 25-year-old Ehab Abed was buried in Rafah city, a day after he was fatally shot during the Great March of Return rallies. Abed was the latest victim of the protests that began in the besieged enclave ten months ago. Palestinians have been holding weekly rallies to protest Israel’s occupation of their land and the blockade on Gaza. Health officials in Gaza say, at least 209 people have been killed in Israel’s crackdown on the demonstrations so far.

US Venezuela intervention

Russia accuses the United States of plotting a coup in Venezuela amid a diplomatic unrest in the Latin American country. Russia’s UN envoy, Vasily Nebenzya, made the comment in a Security Council meeting called by the United States. He said the situation in Venezuela does not pose an external threat to world peace and security and therefore, shouldn’t be dealt with in the UNSC. Nebenzya said Washington is abusing the prerogatives of the world body by its “shameless attempts” to oust the legitimately-elected government of Venezuela. Some members of the UN Security Council, including South Africa and Equatorial Guinea also took a jab at the US for interfering in the internal affairs of an independent country. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo however, renewed Washington’s opposition to the Venezuelan government, describing it as a “former regime”.
