Hashemi condemns ‘US injustice’

Press TV anchor Marzieh Hashemi, who was recently freed after 11 days of detention in US, has condemned the American judicial system for the way she was treated. Hashemi said the US wants to intimidate everyone who stands against it. The African American journalist pledged to speak the truth as long as she is able to. She also urged everyone to stand up against injustice. She made the comments during a rally in Washington DC. Demonstrators held signs and chanted slogans against the country’s judicial system. They demanded answers as to why she was detained. Similar rallies were also held in a number of other countries including Canada, the UK, Australia and Pakistan.

Iran missile program

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman says the country’s missile capabilities are part of its legitimate defensive power and are not open to negotiations. Bahram Qassemi said the capabilities ensure Iran’s national security, which is built on deterrence. Qassemi added that Iran strengthens its defensive power to the point it sees fit, based on real estimates of the threats it faces. He also dismissed threats by French Foreign Ministry to impose new sanctions against Iran over its ballistic missile program. Qassemi warned that Iran will review the way it interacts with European countries if they impose any new sanctions on the country.

US ‘destructive policy’

The Russian foreign minister slams the US for its destructive policy on Venezuela, after Washington backed the country’s opposition leader over Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Ending govt. shutdown

The US Congress has unanimously passed a spending deal which tentatively ends the government shutdown. White House says US President Donald Trump has signed the bill into law. The plan will allow federal workers to get their paychecks. It also offers time to lawmakers and the White House to continue debating the US president’s demand for billions of dollars in funding for a border wall with Mexico. Earlier, US Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, touted the deal while hoping the president won’t make the same mistake in the future. However, Trump threatened another shutdown if he doesn’t get the money for his wall.

Slamming Spain stance

The Venezuelan president has slammed Spain for urging early elections in the South American country. Nicolas Maduro stressed that he will never allow anyone to blackmail his country. Maduro made the comments after Spanish Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, warned that Brussels will not recognize Nicolas Maduro as the president if no new elections are held.

Brazil dam collapse

The death toll from a dam collapse at a mine in southeast Brazil has risen to nine, with over 300 more still missing. The break caused a sea of muddy sludge to spread across rural areas, burying buildings and vehicles. Emergency teams rescued scores of trapped people by helicopter. Some local media have reported the death of at least 50 people. It is not clear what caused the dam to break. The accident comes three years after Brazil's worst environmental disaster when a larger dam broke in the same region, killing 19 people.
