'Unprecedented announcement'
On January 5th, 1999, Iran's ministry of intelligence issued an unprecedented statement. It announced that the ministry had discovered an obstinate group within its body. It was investigating other persons in connection to the group.
Forty-five days before the statement was issued, two former political activists Dariush Forouhar and his wife Parvaneh Eskandari were murdered in their home. Although most of their political activity was against the Shah before the Islamic Revolution, the political climate in Iran regarded them as opposition. Iran's enemies began propaganda against the Islamic Republic.
