Questioning US offer

Iran’s parliament speaker has criticized the European Union for lack of practical actions in salvaging the 2015 nuclear deal. Larijani insisted that Iran has the right to reconsider the agreement in line with its national interests. The top official acknowledged the EU’s political determination towards keeping the deal alive. He, however, underlined that the bloc should decide whether it is willing to stick to the accord and bear the consequences in the face of US pressures. Larijani also dismissed the US president’s call for negotiations with Iran as farce.

Georgia protest

Thousands of people have protested in the Georgian capital Tbilisi against the results of the country's presidential election. Defeated candidate Grigol Vashadze said opposition parties would challenge the outcome in court. He has called the vote a criminal farce and has called for snap parliamentary elections. The central election commission said Salome Zurabishvili, who was backed by the ruling Georgian Dream party, had secured over 59 percent of the vote. Vashadze garnered 40.5 percent.

Yemen peace push

The UN special envoy has arrived in the Yemeni capital as efforts continue to re-open Sana’a international airport. According to UN sources, Martin Griffiths is expected to hold talks with Yemen's Ansarullah movement. The visit comes ahead of potential negotiations in Sweden this week aimed at ending nearly four years of Saudi-led war on the impoverished Arab country. Earlier, the Saudi-led coalition granted request of Griffiths to evacuate wounded Ansarullah fighters to Muscat. According to the Saudi Press Agency, a UN chartered plane will evacuate 50 men in a “confidence building measure”. Two rounds of Yemen peace negotiations have so far failed, one in September and the other in 2016. The Saudi war on Yemen has claimed the lives of over 15,000 Yemenis since it began in early 2015.

France protest

French ambulance drivers have joined the nationwide protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies. The ambulance drivers blocked traffic at some major streets in the capital Paris. They demanded the suspension of the government’s medical transport finance reform. The move follows a weekend of violent clashes in Paris, Marseilles, Bordeaux and Lyon. Meanwhile, the French prime minister has held talks with party leaders and protest organizers as the country is seeing one of its worst disturbances since 1968. The demonstrators are angry at Macron’s economic reforms that they say have resulted in diesel tax hikes and high living costs.

Qatar quits OPEC

Qatar has announced its withdrawal from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC. Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi said Qatar will continue to produce oil, but would concentrate on developing and increasing its natural gas output. He said the country’s potential is in gas production rather than oil. The Qatari official also said that OPEC was informed of the decision ahead of the announcement.
