Iran-China trade ties

The European Union says it opposes the US move of re-imposing oil and financial sanctions against Iran. European Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovisi said Brussels does not approve of Washington’s decision. China has also defended its relations with Iran and expressed regret that the US reinstated sanctions on Tehran. Chinese foreign ministry said the country's lawful trade cooperation with Iran should be respected. On Saturday, Russia slammed the US sanctions, saying it will reject any anti-Iran measures as long as they are NOT approved by the UN Security Council.

US-South Korea drills

South Korea and the United States have resumed war games that were suspended following a historic summit between American and North Korean leaders in June. The joint drills are held near the South Korean city of Pohang and involve 500 marines from the two sides. Battalion-level or small-scale maneuvers will continue for two weeks. Seoul and Washington have long carried out joint exercises which they insist are purely defensive in nature, but Pyongyang sees as a rehearsal for invasion. The drills come just days before a planned meeting between the US Secretary of State and his North Korean counterpart to discuss denuclearization and plans for a second summit between their leaders. US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed a vaguely worded statement during their first meeting, but little progress has been made since.

Saudi murder ‘cover-up’

Turkey makes further revelations regarding Saudi Arabia’s cover-up operations in the murder case of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. A Turkish official says the kingdom sent two experts to Istanbul to remove evidence of the murder. The official has told the AFP, on condition of anonymity that a toxicologist and a chemicals expert came to Turkey with the sole purpose of doing the cover-up. The official added that the mission came before the Turkish police were allowed to search the Saudi consulate building where Khashoggi was killed. The new revelations further contradict Saudi Arabia’s accounts of the incident. Riyadh says rogue agents killed the journalist and it has no knowledge of where his body is.

US Iran sanctions

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has officially announced the re-imposition of what he calls largest ever sanctions on Iran. Pompeo said the objective of the sanctions is to deprive the Iranian government of revenues it uses to fund violence and destabilize the world. The top US diplomat said the United States will be relentless in exerting more pressure if Tehran doesn’t change its behavior. The US secretary of state also threatened that doing business with the Islamic Republic will have painful consequences. He however said the US has exempted eight countries, including China, India and South Korea from buying Iranian oil.

War on Syria

The US-led coalition’s attacks in eastern Syria kill more civilians. Syrian media says the air strikes have killed at least three children in the city of Dayr al-Zawr. The attacks come as civilians have taken the brunt of such air raids in the country. On Saturday, US-led air strikes also killed at least 15 people in Dayr al-Zawr while on Thursday some 60 others died in similar attacks in the same area. Damascus has strongly condemned the US-led air raids. In a number of letters to the United Nations, the Syrian government has called for an end to the presence of US and other foreign forces in its territory.
