Yemeni kids dying

The United Nations children’s agency has sounded the alarm about the catastrophic consequences of Saudi Arabia’s blockade and war on Yemen. The UNICEF Middle East director said one-point-eight million Yemeni children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition. Geert Cappelaere added that 400,000 of these children are in life-threatening conditions. He said trucks with life-saving supplies are barred from entering the port city of Hudaydah. The Saudi-led coalition continues to pound the city despite UN warnings. The Saudi bombardment and blockade have caused catastrophic humanitarian crises in Hudaydah.

Iraq reacts to US interference

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry rejects what it calls US interference in its internal affairs following a US embassy statement asking Iran to respect Iraq's sovereignty. The ministry said it rejects the interference especially in domestic security reform. The US embassy in Baghdad posted a message on Twitter on Tuesday saying Tehran must respect the sovereignty of the Iraqi government and allow the disarming, demobilization, and reintegration of Shia military groups. The Foreign Ministry also demanded the Twitter post be removed.

US-led attacks in Syria

At least 15 people have been killed in US-led coalition airstrikes near the Syrian city of Dayr al-Zawr. The state TV said all those killed were civilians. The details of the raids are still sketchy. The attacks came only days after over 60 people were killed in similar airstrikes on two villages in Dayr al-Zawr province. The dead included children and women. The US-led coalition is operating in Syria without the government’s authorization or a UN mandate. The Syrian government has asked the United Nations to conduct an international investigation into crimes perpetrated against Syrians by the coalition purportedly fighting Daesh terrorists.

US midterm elections

Figures show a huge turnout in the early voting for the US midterm elections. More than 30 million Americans have already cast their ballots in at least 48 US states ahead of the Tuesday’s vote. The number of votes in at least 28 states has already surpassed the 2014 early votes. The developments come as US President Donald Trump is leaving no stones unturned to garner support for his preferred candidates. Control of both houses of the US Congress, currently dominated by Republicans, and 36 governors' offices will be at stake in the elections.

Central America migrants

Thousands of Central American migrants continue their march toward the United States despite the US president’s threats to block them at the country’s southern borders. Those who are currently in Mexico have now advanced into the state of Veracruz. The Veracruz route, which leads to the US state of Texas, avoids a high-altitude climb via Mexico City. The Veracruz governor had earlier proposed that passenger buses would be provided to transfer migrants to Mexico City. But he called off the plan saying it would cause a water shortage in the city. The flow of immigrants comes as Donald Trump has called the Central Americans a security threat. He has ordered the deployment of thousands of troops to the Mexican border to contain them.
