Syria army gains

Syrian government forces make significant gains in their ongoing offensive against Daesh and other terrorist groups in the country’s southwest. In the latest advances, the Syrian army established control over new desert areas in Suwayda province. The Syrian army also inflicted heavy losses on Daesh terrorists. Government forces are hunting down remnants of the Takfiri terror group in the country’s south. They army and its allied units have liberated many areas from Daesh terrorists over the past months in the region.

UN calls for Yemen probe

The United Nations has called for an investigation into Saudi airstrikes that killed dozens of children in Yemen’s Sa’ada province. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres requested an independent and prompt probe into the incident. Saudi-led coalition on Thursday pounded Sa’ada targeting a market and a school bus in the northwestern province. Over 50 people, most of them children, were killed as a result. The coalition described the attack as legitimate. Yemen’s Ansarullah movement slammed the massacre and described the coalition’s justification as absurd. Iran has also condemned the school bus attack as a war crime and called on the international community to stop the Saudi-led assaults on Yemen. Nearly 15,000 Yemenis have been killed since Saudi Arabia and its allies launched a war against the Arab country in 2015.

Iraq vote recount

Iraq’s electoral commission has announced the result of the vote recount of parliamentary elections. The electoral commission said Cleric Moqtada al-Sadr’s party came in the first place after a manual recount. According to the results, Sadr’s alliance retained all 54 of the 329 seats it won in the May 12 vote. The Conquest Alliance also got the second place. The parliament ordered a vote recount after May’s elections were stained with allegations of fraud.

Taliban offensive in Afghanistan

At least 12 people, including children, were killed in a bomb blast in the western Afghan city of Herat. Local officials said the attack took place in the city's Qol-e-Urdu area on Thursday. According to eyewitnesses, the bomber was riding a motorcycle. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet. In August, Afghanistan witnessed several terrorist attacks which killed dozens of Afghan people.

US sanctions against Russia

Tensions between Moscow and Washington have escalated further following the announcement of new US sanctions over Russia’s alleged involvement in the poisoning of a former Russian double agent in the UK. Moscow has denounced the restrictions as unacceptable and illegal. It has also threatened to take retaliatory measures.

Ryanair strike in Europe

Staff at Irish airline, Ryanair, go on strike in several European countries. The industrial action is planned for 24 hours and has affected flights in Germany, Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Some 50,000 passengers on 400 flights have been notified of the cancellations. Ryanair workers, particularly its pilots, are upset with their pay and conditions. The airline, however, says it is paying its pilots more than what its competitors are doing. Ryanair is a low-cost airline based in Dublin.
