Here is a brief look at Press TV newsroom's headlines from 1800 GMT, August 8, 2018 to 0800 GMT, August 9, 2018.

Iran slams US illegal acts

An unprecedented breach of international law. Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations says the US is not only violating a Security Council resolution, but it’s also punishing countries which are abiding by it. Gholamali Khoshroo was referring to UN Security Council resolution 2231; which was unanimously adopted by the council to approve the Iran nuclear deal. Iran and the other signatories to the accord say the US withdrawal from the agreement and its sanctions against Iran, which were lifted under the accord, are a serious breach of the Washington’s obligations under the UN charter. The US has also threatened that any country doing business with Tehran will be penalized.

Canada-Saudi Arabia row

Canada refuses to back down from its criticism of Saudi Arabia’s rights record that caused diplomatic tensions with Riyadh. Trudeau said Canada will not apologize to Saudi Arabia. He added that his country will continue to engage with Riyadh. The feud between the two countries began after the Canadian ambassador to Saudi Arabia in a tweet demanded Riyadh release two jailed Saudi activists. The Saudi government angrily reacted to the demand.

UN calls for nuclear disarmament

The United Nations Secretary General calls for the scrapping of nuclear weapons worldwide. Guterres was speaking in a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He supported the ongoing talks between the US and North Korea. The UN chief urged Pyongyang to give its nuclear arms. Abe said Japan, as the only nation to be hit by atomic bombs, will work toward making the world free of nuclear weapons. Guterres is in Japan to attend an annual ceremony, marking the US atomic attack on the Japanese city of Nagasaki during World War Two. The attack killed 74,000 people.

Gaza under attack

At least three Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Health Ministry said a pregnant woman and her daughter died in an air raid on central Gaza. Israeli shelling also killed a 30-year-old man north of the blockaded territory. A dozen Palestinians were wounded. An Israeli man was injured in Eshkol in a retaliatory rocket attack from Gaza. The Israeli minister for military affairs said its warplanes carried out at least 140 airstrikes mostly against the positions of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in Gaza since Wednesday night. Israel has repeatedly bombed the besieged coastal enclave over the past few weeks.

Gaza-Israel escalation

Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, has condemned the Israeli airstrikes against the besieged Gaza Strip, which killed at least three Palestinians. A Hamas spokesman said the group will respond in kind to the attacks. A pregnant woman and a toddler were among those killed. Nearly a dozen others were also wounded. Tel Aviv threatened another full-scale military offensive amid escalating tensions. The Israeli army said its warplanes pounded more than 140 sites belonging to Hamas in Gaza in response to rocket fire from the territory. Hamas claimed the rocket attacks into the occupied lands, saying it was avenging the deaths of two fighters killed in an Israeli fire on Tuesday. The UN says it’s deeply alarmed and called on all sides to step back from the brink.

Argentina police clash with protesters

Police in Argentina clash with pro-choice protesters in Buenos Aires after the country’s senate narrowly rejected a bill to legalize abortion. The protesters set barricades outside the National Congress on fire and slammed the government. Police used water cannons to disperse the protesters. Pro-choice demonstrators have been rallying for weeks in favor of the bill. It was supposed to permit abortion in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. The bill was rejected by a seven vote margin. It was not supported by President Mauricio Macri too. Only three Latino nations of Uruguay, Guyana and Cuba, permit early-term abortion.

Indonesia earthquake

A strong aftershock has caused further destruction and panic on the Indonesian island of Lombok. The US Geological Survey says the five point nine magnitude tremor struck at a shallow depth in the northwest of the island. It damaged some buildings and prompted residents and evacuees at shelters to run out in panic. On Sunday, a devastating six-point-nine earthquake hit the resort island causing 164 fatalities. Indonesian authorities said at least 1400 people were seriously injured and 156,000 displaced. People in makeshift camps are in desperate need of medicine, food and clean water. Aid groups fear that shattered roads may cause fatal consequences for possible survivors in remote mountainous areas.
