Division on Iran sanctions

Germany says it will continue to offer export and investment guarantees for companies doing business with Iran despite US sanctions. The German economy ministry says Berlin remains in dialogue with the US on exemptions for German companies from Iran sanctions. This is while the US administration says it will fully enforce anti-Iran sanctions starting on Tuesday at 0401 GMT. The sanctions will prohibit the Iranian government from buying US banknotes. Broad sanctions will also be imposed on Iranian industries, including rug exports. The US has also told other countries that they must halt imports of Iranian oil starting in early November or face US financial measures. Iran has repeatedly slammed Washington’s move to re-impose sanctions.

Rohingya refugee crisis

A leading international human rights organization has urged the government in Bangladesh to relocate Rohingya refugees living in severely overcrowded camps. Human Rights Watch said the refugees are in danger, because of flooding and landslides as well as communicable diseases and violence gripping the camps. HRW said, catastrophic weather conditions still threaten Rohingya lives, despite efforts by aid agencies to develop safety plans. More than 700,000 Rohingya Muslims crossed into Bangladesh last year to escape deadly crackdown by Myanmar’s army and extremist Buddhists. The United Nations has described the violence against the Rohingya as ethnic cleansing. The UN has also criticized Myanmar for delaying the Rohingya repatriation that was agreed on with Bangladesh in January.

US gun violence

At least 40 people are shot and four killed in a spate of shootings in the US city of Chicago over the weekend. Police say the shootings happened in a span of seven hours from midnight Saturday to early Sunday morning. They say the incidents included both random and targeted shootings, most of them connected to gang violence. Gunmen targeted a block party, a post-funeral gathering, and other gatherings. The brunt of the violence reported in the city's West Side, where 25 people were shot in separate attacks. Statistics show that gun violence is an epidemic in the United States, with more than 30,000 gun-related deaths reported across the nation annually.

Indonesian earthquake

The death toll from Indonesia’s earthquake rises to at least 98. Indonesian officials say the number of deaths could rise. They also say more than two-hundred people were injured in the magnitude 6.9 quake. Rescuers are searching through the debris for possible survivors. Authorities evacuated thousands of people from the affected areas. The earthquake flattened at least 13,000 houses. It cut communications and left people in dire need of medicines and food. Dozens of aftershocks followed the July 29 quake that was also felt on the neighboring islands including Bali.

Zarif’s remarks

The Iranian foreign minister says the leaders of the United States, Saudi Arabia and Israel are isolated in their hostility toward Iran. Mohammad Javad Zarif added, the entire world opposes the US policies on Iran. The top Iranian diplomat acknowledged the US decision to re-impose sanctions on Tehran will cause difficulties for the Islamic Republic. Zarif noted that Iran has proved it can overcome tougher situations. The Iranian foreign minister made the remarks during a speech to Iranian journalists.
