Hiroshima atomic bombing
The Japanese are marking the 73nd anniversary of the US atomic bombing of the city of Hiroshima with a call from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to free the world from nuclear weapons. Hundreds of people and officials gathered for a memorial service. On August 6, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima that destroyed most of the city and instantly killed 80,000 of its citizens. It dropped a second atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki three days later which also killed tens of thousands. Many more died of injuries and radiation exposure in the following years.
Indonesia's deadly quake
At least 82 people have been killed in a magnitude seven earthquake that jolted the Indonesian island of Lombok. Scores of people were also injured in the quake, which was also felt on the neighboring island of Bali. According to the U-S Geological Survey, the temblor struck just 10 kilometers underground and was followed by secondary quakes and nearly two dozen aftershocks. Lombok's main city of Mataram was worst hit by the quake. The earthquake also prompted a tsunami warning, which was later cancelled. The quake came a week after a shallow 6 point 4 magnitude quake hit Lombok, killing 17 people and damaging hundreds of buildings.
Trump acknowledgement on Russia
The US president has acknowledged that his son met with Russians ahead of the 2016 presidential election to get information on Hillary Clinton. Donald Trump claims it was totally legal. The president’s son and others had said the meeting was meant to gather damaging information on the Democratic candidate. Trump has repeatedly said the meeting took place without his knowledge. Special Counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether Trump campaign members coordinated with Russia ahead of the election. One part of the inquiry is about Trump’s son meeting with Russians. The president has denied that his campaign worked with Moscow, saying no collusion. US intelligence agencies concluded last year that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election on Trump's behalf. Moscow has denied the charge.
US Iran sanctions
The US Secretary of State says Washington will fully enforce anti-Iran sanctions on orders from President Donald Trump after he pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal. Mike Pompeo said the re-imposition of sanctions is an important pillar in US policy toward Iran. The sanctions are due to be reinstated on Tuesday at 0401 GMT. They would prohibit the Iranian government from buying U-S banknotes. Broad sanctions will also be imposed on Iranian industries, including rug exports. The US has also told other countries that they must halt imports of Iranian oil starting in early November or face US financial measures. Iran has repeatedly slammed Washington’s move to re-impose sanctions.
Gaza freedom flotilla
Some two dozen boats have set sail from Gaza’s seaport in a symbolic attempt to break the Israeli naval blockade on the impoverished enclave. Press TV’s Ashraf Shannon has more details in the following report.
Syrian army gains
The Syrian army has dealt a heavy blow to terrorist groups by targeting their hideouts in several areas. The Syrian Air Force reportedly pounded Daesh gatherings deep into the desert of Suwayda province. Syrian media say scores of terrorists were killed and many others were injured in the raid. Elsewhere in the Western-Central province of Hama, government troops also launched an offensive against Nusra Front terrorists. Several bases and two weapons storage facilities belonging to the terrorists were destroyed as a result. Syrian forces are in control of most areas in Hama province but some districts are still held by militants.
