Iran nuclear deal

The Iranian President has warned about the consequences of a possible US pullout from the 2015 nuclear agreement. Hassan Rouhani issued the warning during a meeting with visiting French Foreign Minister in the capital Tehran. Rouhani stressed that everyone will regret the possible collapse of the landmark nuclear deal. Rouhani said the Islamic Republic is ready for any situation if it deems unacceptable. He noted that Tehran will never be the first to violate the deal. Rouhani also called on all signatories to the JCPOA to remain committed to their obligations under the accord. Meanwhile, Iran’s top diplomat has called on the European Union to compel the US to abide by the historic agreement. Mohammad Javad Zarif said Washington is an obstacle to the bloc’s own adherence to the deal.

Kashmir shutdown

A complete shutdown is underway in Indian-controlled Kashmir in protest against the killing of civilians at the hands of Indian soldiers. Our correspondent Shahana Butt has the details.

US controversial tariffs

French President Emmanuel Macron says the European Union must react quickly if the US goes ahead with its proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum. Macron added that Trump’s proposed measures amount to economic nationalism in which all sides lose. German government spokesman Steffen Seibert also said a hike in US import duties for European-made products will affect international trade flows, European industries as well as workers and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. He stressed that Germany will consult with its European partners about the next steps. While Trump’s measures have been condemned by most European countries as well as the World Trade Organization and the International Monetary Fund, the US president has warned that tariffs on European cars might also increase.

EU response to Trump

The European Union says it will take swift and firm action against any trade policies introduced by Donald Trump that could put thousands of jobs in the bloc at risk. The US president is threatening to impose tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum and cars from the EU.

Inter-Korean talks

North Korean media say the country’s leader has told a high-ranking South Korean delegation about his will to mend ties. North Korea’s official news agency said Kim Jong-un firmly and vigorously wants to write a new history of national reunification. The agency added that Kim exchanged views and made a satisfactory agreement upon hearing the intention of the South Korean President for a summit. This was the first time South Korean officials met with Kim since he took office in 2011. Relations between the two Koreas saw signs of improvement and progress following the positive atmosphere during the recently-held winter Olympic games in the South.

US dancing to Israel tune

The United States renews criticism of the Iranian nuclear deal, saying it will pull out of the accord, despite it being endorsed by the UN Security Council. Pence called the nuclear agreement a disastrous deal which did not prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. He was speaking at the pro-Israel annual AIPAC conference in Washington DC. Pence hailed the alliance between the United States and Israel. He said the alliance is stronger than before, and that America will always stand with Israel. US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, also addressed the AIPAC meeting. She praised President Donald Trump for having the courage to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital.

Myanmar ‘ethnic cleansing’

A senior United Nations official has warned about Myanmar’s ongoing repression of the country’s Rohingya Muslims, labeling it ethnic cleansing. UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, Andrew Gilmour, issued the warning after a visit to Bangladesh, where an estimated 700,000 Muslims have sought refuge since last August. Gilmour also voiced concern about what he called widespread and systematic violence against the minority group. He said the nature of the violence has changed from the frenzied blood-letting and mass rape of last year to a lower intensity campaign of terror and forced starvation. Back in September 2017, the UN human rights commissioner called Myanmar’s treatment of Rohingya Muslims a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.

‘The Louvre in Tehran’

Iranians are flooding to the National Museum in Tehran, for a glimpse at a rare collection of artworks on display, borrowed from the Louvre in Paris. Dubbed “The Louvre in Tehran”, this is the first large-scale exhibition by a major Western museum in Iran.
