Italy: Water cannons and tear gas as anti-fascists clash in Bologna

Italy

Police used water cannons and tear gas against anti-fascists in Piazza Galvani in Bologna on Thursday as they tried to block a political speech of far-right Forza Nuova party leader Roberto Fiore.

There was a previous clash earlier in the day as anti-fascist groups occupied Piazza Galvani Square trying to prevent the celebration of the political meeting. According to local media, five were injured during the first clashes.

Forza Nuova is running for election on March 4. However, the most recent poll put them way below the three percent threshold to elect representatives.

It comes as a number of protests have been held across Italy following the shooting of six migrants in Macerata by a gunman with neo-Nazi sympathies.
