Cuba holds municipal election, first step to name successor to Raul Castro
As Cubans mark the one-year anniversary of the death of Fidel Castro, they voted in municipal elections on Sunday that kick off a process to name a new president to replace Raul Castro.
Fidel Castro, a towering figure of the 20th century who built a Communist-run state on the doorstep of the United States and defied US efforts to topple him, formally ceded the presidency to his younger brother, Raul Castro, in 2008.
Raul Castro had announced that he will step down from the presidency in February 2018 and called for municipal elections, the first in a series of votes that will end with the selection of a new president in February.Save
