Refugees in Greece demand transfer to Germany, start hunger strike
A group of refugees, mainly Syrian women and children, stranded in Greek camps, pitched tents outside the country's parliament on Wednesday in protest against delays in reuniting with relatives in Germany, some saying they were starting a hunger strike.
The refugees, some openly weeping, said they have been waiting several months to more than a year for reunification with family members already in Germany, and had received assurances from the Greek government.
Greek media have reported that Greece and Germany informally agreed in May to slow down refugee reunification, but Greece denies this, and on Wednesday Greek Migration Minister Yannis Mouzalas told a news conference that the government managed to increase family reunification this year, even though it had been accused otherwise. He also praised Germany's track record for taking refugees.
