US Senate new Minority Leader Chuck Schumer takes aim at President–elect Donald Trump’s penchant for Twitter, asserting that it cannot address the “real challenges,” the United States faces.
"Making America great requires more than just 140 characters per issue," he said in his first speech as the chamber's top Democratic leader on the Senate floor late on Tuesday. “With all due respect, America cannot afford a Twitter presidency.”
“The issues facing this country are many… Each one takes serious thought and action. These issues are too important for mere words, our challenges too entrenched for mere tweeting.”
Many in the US are worried that “instead of rolling up your sleeves and forging serious policies, for you Twitter suffices,” added the New York senator.
The 66-year-old lawmaker further argued that it is not wrong to use modern media, “but these issues are complex and demand both careful consideration and action.”
“We cannot tweet them away,” stated the long-time Brooklyn politician (pictured below).
Schumer’s rebuke of the president-elect followed earlier reports claiming that Trump favors him to fellow Republicans in control of both chambers of the Congress, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan.
“He likes Schumer more than Ryan and McConnell because they both wanted him to lose,” a source close to the president-elect’s transition team told the New York Post Sunday.
Trump, a former real estate mogul and reality TV star, has described his relations with Schumer as “very good” and “close” in interviews.
