US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has met with the families of slain American soldiers, amid an ongoing row with the Khan family who lost their son in the Iraq war.
The private meeting took place before a Florida rally on Wednesday with the parents, spouses and siblings of 10 fallen troops as well as Trump’s top military adviser, retired Lieutenant General Michael Flynn.
The New York businessman raised many eyebrows last week after disparaging the parents of Captain Humayun Khan, a Muslim American soldier who died in a 2004 car bombing during the US invasion of Iraq.
During a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia last Thursday,.Khizr Khan, Humayun’s father, criticized Trump over his proposed ban on all Muslims entering the US.
Trump came under fire after trying to belittle Khan and his wife Ghazala by saying that the slain soldier’s father had delivered the entire speech because his mother was not “allowed” to speak.
Meanwhile, Karen Vaughn, the mother of a fallen NAVY SEAL who organized Wednesday's meeting with Trump, said she understands Trump’s real feelings about Gold Star families after talking to him.
“It was really a chance to tell our stories, but also talk about problems with the rules of engagement [for troops in war zones] and the failed policies of the current administration,” Vaughn said. “I walked out feeling like I understood where his heart is, regardless of the comments that he made that may seem insensitive to some.”
She denounced attacks on Trump as a distraction tactic by Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign to hide the former secretary of state’s own national security shortfalls.
Clinton faces many questions about her inaction and mistakes during the 2012 attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that led to the death of several Americans including then Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens.
“This is a media issue that has been blown out of proportion,” she said. “We want to talk about the things our husbands, fathers and sons died for.
Vaughn said Trump did not need to apologize for his remarks.
